About Us
New
Almaden Brewing Company is a nanobrewery located in South San Jose,
California. We brew on a very small
scale in order to experiment with many different styles and techniques. First
runs of a new beer may yield only a few bottles. The knowledge gained in these small runs is
applied to larger batches that are available to family and friends for their
tasting and enjoyment.
Our name derives from the adjacent town of New Almaden, which was the hub of a mining community during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Hacienda Hills surrounding New Almaden were filled with Cinnabar ore, which was refined into Mercury, or Quicksilver, as it was known. This was a key element, needed for the processing of gold. Today, the mines are long since closed but the hills are now part of the Almaden Quicksilver Park, which is open to the public and where hikers can view remnants of this once thriving industry. Our beers tell the story of the New Almaden mines, recalling both the hard work of the miners and the beautiful scenery and wildlife among which they worked.
History: The roots of New Almaden Brewing Company go back to the early 1990’s, when the partners lived in the lower Hudson River valley of New York. There, the hard water brought up from local wells was ideal for brewing European style beers. The Croton Falls Brewing Company, as it was known, was producing beers that were enjoyed by friends and family alike on many occasions. Cold winters provided the right conditions for producing German style lagers, while naturally conditioned spaces were used for cellaring British ales in the summer. Several of today’s beers have their origins in the Croton Falls Brewing Company.
In the late 1990’s, the original brewmaster moved to San Jose, leaving behind equipment that was used by the remaining partners, but later fell into dormancy. The other partners eventually became Californians and, during a reunion in summer, 2013, the group decided to resurrect the brewery. While the fundamentals of brewing haven’t changed in the intervening years, the proliferation of craft breweries has led to widespread availability of materials, new styles and advanced brewing techniques. Today, New Almaden Brewing Company has a full range of capabilities and is constantly experimenting to produce beers that appeal to their drinkers on a variety of levels.
At New Almaden Brewing Company, we strive to be environmentally conscious. Check out our sustainability page to find out about our zero landfill policy and energy/water conservation efforts.
