Sustainability
At
New Almaden Brewing Company, we have the greatest respect for the land from
which our ingredients come, and for the people who grow, ship and deliver them. Our beers are 100% natural and we strive to
be environmentally conscious in everything we do. Highlights of our stewardship of the planet
include:
Ingredients: We use only the finest barley and hops grown in California and throughout the West Coast, avoiding the use of imported ingredients wherever possible. Our yeasts are cultured in California and delivered to our local distributor at the peak of freshness. As brewing operations mature, we will eventually culture our own yeasts, thus avoiding the environmental impact of their shipping.
Processing: We make every effort to minimize the consumption of both water and energy in the production of our beers. For sanitizing our equipment, we have developed spray processes that have reduced our water consumption dramatically. Waste water from sanitizing is recovered and used for landscaping. Our work areas incorporate both natural and high-efficiency (LED) lighting to reduce electricity consumption. Our lagering facility incorporates high efficiency refrigeration and is designed for minimum energy loss when moving product in and out. Every effort is made to time our beer choices to accommodate the seasonal variation of temperature in our storage facilities.
Zero-Land Fill Policy: One of the cornerstones of our brewing philosophy is that everything that enters the brewery is made into product, or recycled in some way. Spent grains and hops from our brewing processes are composted, and then used as soil amendment in the brewery’s on-site vegetable garden. Waste water is recovered wherever possible and used for landscaping. Finally, all packaging materials from our ingredients are fully recycled.
The future: As brewing operations expand, we will eventually derive all of our electricity from solar panels and other renewable sources. This will include both brewing operations and deliveries, which will be made by a 100% electric vehicle.
